Dear Bloomington Water Company Shareholder:
Below is some important information about the irrigation water supplied by Bloomington Water Company:
The water is NOT POTABLE and it is a violation of state and local health codes to cross-connect this water with your culinary source–even by way of check valves or back-flow devices. The water comes from sources that have a high alkaline and salinity content. It is best to root water (bubblers or drip lines) all broad-leafed plants but grass does great with a regular pressurized sprinkling system.
The water is on year-round and Tuesdays are the scheduled days for shut-off if routine maintenance is needed. Any other times, the water is off by emergency only. BWC property owners should always call for Blue Stakes before digging.
The water delivery is by pressurized system to Bloomington Ranches and eligible lots by request in Bloomington Hills. It is best to test the pressure at your own valve to determine how to design your watering system. (Note that pressures will be slightly higher in winter.) The water may not be used for flood irrigating. This includes leaving a hose running or opening a tap. Water is to be sprinkled with normal-sized lawn sprinklers, bubblers, or drip lines.
If not already installed, property owners MUST install a second valve, preferably only 2 – 5 feet from the main BWC valve to allow for personal use while maintaining and servicing individual systems. If the personal valve fails or leaks, please call to have BWC maintenance personnel shut down the main valve. These valves are under substantial pressure and if broken, the entire irrigation system must be shut down to repair or replace the valve. Stiff penalties may be assessed to the property owner if this happens.
The water is in the process of being metered to comply with a State mandate on secondary water companies, but currently, shareholders are allowed to use the water they need to irrigate landscaping. However, this does not include filling swimming pools or ponds. Such usage would fall under the “no flood irrigating” regulation. Nor is the water to be wasted (i.e. allowing water to run off the property or down the street.) We live in a desert climate — please use all water wisely.
Most of the local nurseries are familiar with the water quality of the various irrigation water sources in Southern Utah. You may want to consult them before planting. Another excellent source is the County Extension Agent. They can advise you on what types of plants thrive on water with salt and alkali content.
